MY Birthday Present Liechtenstein is the fourth-smallest country in Europe ( 15 X 5 Miles) and lies in the heart of the Alps between Switzerland and Austria. It is the sixth-smallest country in the world with a population of around 37,000. These days there are few countries which can claim to be debt-free. Liechtenstein is one of them and aims to remain so in future through a successful economy and conscious, disciplined use of the resources at its disposal. Instead of national debt, Liechtenstein has large reserves resulting from the state's budgetary discipline. This means that the public sector is financially powerful. Political contuinuity, a reliable social, legal and economic environment, liberal economic policies and the Swiss franc as official currency also contribute to creating the necessary stability. Standard & Poor's confirmed the Principality's AAA credit rating and emphasised the economy's stable outlook. The coat of arms of the Princely House of Liechtenstein is also the coat of arms of the Principality of Liechtenstein. It is used for seals and stamps as well as on official signs and stationery. However, the most well-known symbol of Liechtenstein is the blue and red national flag. The national flag of Liechtenstein consists of two equal horizontal bands of blue (top) and red. In the blue band there is a crown-like golden symbol depicting the Princely Hat. The origins and meaning of the flag are still not entirely clear. It may have been inspired by the uniforms worn by members of the Princely Court in the 18th century. The Princely Hat was added to the flag in 1937 in order to prevent it being confused with the national flag of Haiti. The Principality of Liechtenstein is celebrating its 300th anniversary in 2019. The jubilee is not just an occasion for the inhabitants of Liechtenstein to reflect upon their own history, but is also attracting the attention of many tourists and visitors. Liechtenstein is the only state in the world that acquired its name from the reigning Princely Family, and is closely linked to Austria and European history through the Princely House with its over 7 centuries of history. In 1923 a customs treaty was signed with Switzerland. This was the foundation of a close partnership that continues to the present. In the year 1938. Prince Franz Josef II of Liechtenstein was the first reigning Prince to take up residence in Liechtenstein. In addition, he also renovated Vaduz Castle, which had previously been more of a ruin than a place of abode. The Princely Family continues to reside in Vaduz Castle to this day. Liechtenstein again remained neutral during the Second World War, and was directly confronted with the war only in 1945. At this time, parts of the German Wehrmacht made their way to Liechtenstein territory and surrendered. Despite massive pressure from the Soviet Union, these soldiers were not extradited. Today, Liechtenstein is one of the most heavily industrialised countries in the world. It has the highest per capita gross domestic product and income on the planet! You might be asking yourself... "Has Bretty turned into a travel guide or a Salesman for the Principality of Liechtenstein?" Nooooo! I wanted a silver 1 krone for my birthday! Between 1900 and 1915 only 250,000 were minted. I was able to get a 1915 of which only 75,000 were minted and probably very few remain anywhere in the world today. Having been there... little Liechtenstein has a special place in my heart. |

Thanks for the lessons in Liechtenstein history and economics; To tell you the truth, I had forgotten about that tiny country locked in the Alps. It is good that you refreshed my memory. The coin is a great treasure, and a wonderful Bday present.

Very interesting and informative. Too bad other countries don't follow the example of Liechtenstein in their day to day activities ... and serve beer at McDonald's! I enjoyed the reading and hope that you enjoyed your birthday (probably without the McDonald's beer).

me thinks you need to take a vacation there too. Like it's neighbors I'm sure it's a beautiful country. Usually try to comment on your blogs. If I don't I'm off line for a few days. I figure no sense in commenting on a blog from a few days back. Course I admit I don't comment either if I (--hangs head in shame--) knows nothing of the subject, (ie Randy Rhoads)
