Times UP!

Iowa has close ties to China. Our former Governor Terry Branstad was appointed ambassador a few months ago by President Trump. Ever since President Xi Jinping, who has been to Iowa, took power in 2012 the leader has stressed a drive to infuse every aspect of Chinese education with a "patriotic spirit".

The country in September passed a National Anthem Law applying to mainland citizens. China's legislature was this week deliberating the criminal law amendment and mulling whether to apply the existing law in Hong Kong and Macau, China has been fine-tuning the legislation on the proper way and place to sing its national anthem, recently tightening rules that already bar people from performing it at parties, weddings and funerals.

Disrespecting China's national anthem could carry a prison sentence of up to three years under the new draft law amendment, which may also affect Hong Kong and Macau. .It was unclear if the maximum penalty would apply in the two semi-autonomous southern cities. Any move to punish anthem insults could trigger a backlash in Hong Kong, which enjoys rights and freedoms not seen on the mainland under a "One country, two systems" formula. Some football fans in the self-governing city have booed the Chinese anthem when it was played at matches, despite appeals for restraint. The former British colony was returned to Chinese rule in 1997 under a promise that rights and freedoms would be protected for 50 years.

Under the new measures to make the offence a crime, "punishment ranges from removal of political rights and public surveillance to criminal detention and imprisonment of up to three years", said the state news agency Xinhua.

I am thinking that many in our country have taken our rights and freedoms for granted far too long. Our lamestream media holding up as heroes those who disrespect our flag and national anthem. It's high time we reconsider the extent to which we support those institutions such as the NFL which allows their employees to make political statements while "on the time clock." Next Sunday find something else better to do besides watch football.. Send the NFL, the players, and the advertisers a subtle simple message by hitting them where it counts... their pocketbooks. Papa John's Pizza, an NFL sponsor, has already lost $40 million and is reconsidering their ties to the NFL. Next Sunday show your support for our Veterans, Military, Firemen, Police and First responders by watching anything else on TV besides the NFL.

We don't need laws to make us show proper respect.

Good idea, Bret. Boycott the NFL. Football, and its players, get way more attention than they deserve. Politics has no business in entertainment sports.

So apparently, like out "patriotic" president, you don't believe in the first amendment right of freedom of expression. Trump only believes it as it applies to him. No one else has this right. And he has the nerve to claim this is "disrespect." This from the man who got 4 deferments so he wouldn't have to serve in the military. I guess cowardice isn't disrespect.

How nice of you to drop by with an off topic claim. Military deferments are / were legal during that period for college education. Trump did attend a military academy where Donald Trump was named a captain for his senior year. At the New York Military Academy, he ordered the officers under his command to keep strict discipline. Shoes had to be shined. Beds had to be made. Underclassmen had to spring to attention.

A player like Duchene would vault the Blue Jackets past the Penguins and make them Stanley Cup favorites.
